WAHM’s Child Care

free daycare

Many potential Wahms think that starting an at home children day care business will be an easy way to make extra money and stay at home with their children. Owning a childcare business can be rewarding and does have many perks. However, the realities of this type of business are far from the ideal expectations of most folks considering childcare.

If you have experience in child care or a degree related to the child care field, then opening your own daycare as a Wahm is a natural extension of your our of the home job. However, there are a few important distinctions between working for someone else taking care of children and running your own in-home facility.

The first is money. At home childcare businesses can be profitable, but it normally takes six to eighteen months for Wahms to see any substantial income coming in. This may not be a problem for you, and if you are committed to building the quality and size of your business, the start of your profitability can be on the low end of that scale.

It takes several months to a year to turn a daycare into a profitable daycare for many reasons. First of all, each state has its own licensed childcare requirements. Getting licensed to have a home daycare means attending classes, passing certification and having your home inspected. While you’re going through this process, you can look into doing some unlicensed childcare for a few children to start building your business. Each state has its own rules for unlicensed childcare. You should take the steps, however, to get licensed because it will increase your clout in the eyes of parents and make it easier to get funding for your daycare.

It can also take a while to become a profitable daycare because of the start up costs involved. While you do have some infant and child items from your own children, there are many things that you’ll need to purchase in order to make your home functional as a daycare. You’ll want to purchase tables and chairs, art supplies, music CDs, games and other activities that the children can use while they are in your home.

Finally, it takes time to build up a list of children who attend your daycare. There are many home daycare centers to choose from in every town, and once parents find a good center they normally stay there long term. Finding new regulars can be difficult, especially if you don’t take care of infants or babies. Getting consumers can be easier when you’re licensed, but to begin with you need to rely on networking with parenting groups, folks at your church, folks in your community and friends in order to build your business.

Despite the long start up time, many Wahms find that owning their own in home childcare center is a great solution to their work at home problem. There are many benefits to taking care of other people’s children. Your children will never be without playmates to entertain them. You’ll have access to many fun and exciting programs made especially for free daycare business owners, as well as discounts on supplies. You may even be eligible for federal subsidies for food and diapers for your cares.

To find out if owning a home daycare is right for you, read up on the subject. Visit other home daycares and ask how those Wahms are enjoying their business. Find out what your state and local regulations are regarding licensed and unlicensed daycare. Once you’ve done your homework, you’ll know if owning a childcare is right for you.

Can you work with kids around?

I have tried to do some work on this blog today – I really have. As it is Sunday and my husband is home I thought I would be able to do some work. How wrong could I be.

I thought the kids would want to spend time with their Dad as he has been working long hours all week. But no, Mummy was still the favourite word of the day. Everytime I sat down at my PC one or all of them (we have three kids, 5 year old twins and an 11 month old baby) would come and find me. It is lovely to be with them, it is one of the main reasons I enjoy this ‘job’ (I know it is not really a job, but it is what I do for a living), but sometimes they can be the biggest distraction.

So after a couple of attempts of trying to work I gave up, hence the reason I am writing this post when they are all safely tucked up in bed!

What I wanted to say was it can be quite difficult working from home sometimes, especially when you have children. But isin’t that the reason you are doing this? So you can spend time with your kids, be there for them when they need you. I have found you generally just need to change your working hours a little. I tend to work more when the twins are at school and the baby has her afternoon nap or on at night when they have all gone to bed.

But I don’t mind this as I get to take them to school every morning, pick them up every afternoon, go to the park or walk home and talk about what they have done that day. See my little baby girls face when she wakes up from her afternoon nap.

I did work in an office when the twins were small and I hated it. I loved my job but hated being away from the kids. Now with having our third baby I can see I did miss out. But at the time I needed to work. So however much the kids drive me insane distracting me every five minutes, I am determined to continue to make working from home a success, because the alternative of going out and getting a job really is a scary thought!

’till next time

So you want to work from home?

If you have ever thought of working from home you will probably have turned to the Internet. When you do a search in Google for ‘Work from home’ opportunities you get an incredible amount of options. Working your way through these options is quite a daunting task, and if you are new to the work from home arena then it is all the more scary. You will find all kinds of promises, easy get rich quick schemes, special offers, limited time offers that can make you loads of money in just a few days!

I am sure you consider yourself to be quite a level headed person, who can spot a scam a mile off an does not get swayed easily. However, after you have read a few of the sales letters from some of these sites which promise untold riches for only a few hours work a day, you begin to think working from home maybe easier than you first thought. You wonder why everyone else isin’t doing it!

But and it is a big but, some if not most of these opportunities are not what they seem. Sure someone will get rich but chances are it won’t be you. Not straight away anyway.

After you have bought a few of these ‘must-have’ products, programs etc and they turn out to be not quite what you imagined and you don’t get the support you expected you suddenly realise that this is not as easy as you first thought. That it is going to take you some time to start making money and an even bigger realisation it that you will have to do some work. Quite a shock to the system after you thought you were going to be a millionaire some time soon without having to do much work to get there!

However, all is not lost. There are some great opportunities out there and you will find genuine people who are making money using the Internet and who genuinely want to help other people do the same. I am not going to give you a list of people because I don’t know which area you are interested in, and also it would look like I was trying to sell you all kinds of products just so I could make some money.

One thing I will say is whatever area you find interests you be it affiliate marketing, product creation, selling on e-Bay etc do your research. If you find someone who is selling a product or a resource do your own research about the person and/or the product. Read reviews, look on forums. Can you contact the person directly? Do they answer your question personally? This is all really important stuff, and stuff you should feel happy with before you part with your hard earned cash.

Chances are you are wanting to work from home for a number of reasons, you may have lost your job, you may want to supplement your income, you may of just had a baby or you may find yourself off work through illness. All of these things happen in life , and all of them usually mean things will be a little more tighter financially for you than they once were. So that last thing you want to do is spend your cash on is some get rich quick scheme that doesn’t even work.

One of the best pieces of advice I can give when looking for any opportunities on the Internet is to trust your gut instinct. If you are interested is something, research it, find out everything you can about the person and product, then think how you feel. If you are still interested walk away from your computer. Don’t worry about time sensitive/limited number offers. These are very rarely genuine. Think about the product, will you be able to use it, is it something you are interested in. If you still feel happy then great, go ahead and buy the product and give it a really good try. And I wish you the very best of luck.

Just remember to trust your instinct, if it looks too good to be true, it usually is.

‘Till next time.

Best wishes

Lyndsay
